WHO CAN I CONTACT REGARDING ASSESSMENTS AND EXEMPTIONS?
The Property Valuation Administrator (PVA) is responsible for the assessment of your property, the address of your property, the mailing address and name changes on your tax bill and exemptions.  For additional information CLICK HERE.

WHAT ARE HOMESTEAD AND DISABILITY EXEMPTIONS?
These exemptions can reduce your taxable assessment. The homestead exemption applies to people over 65 who own the home in which they live. The disability exemption applies to people who are totally disabled and own the home in which they live.  If you think you might qualify for either of these exemptions, and you are not already receiving the exemption, call the Property Valuation Administrator's Office at 270-887-4115

WHY DID I RECEIVE THIS BILL?
Tax bills for real estate property are sent to the owner of record as of January 1, or the current owner, according to the records of the Property Valuation Administrator's Office. If you are not the current owner please call or forward this bill to the owner if possible. If this is not possible, please notify the Sheriff's Office.

I THOUGHT MY MORTGAGE COMPANY TOOK CARE OF THIS / WHY DID I GET THIS BILL?
In the past, you may not have known the amount of tax due, or which districts were taxing your property.  Again this year, all real estate property owners will receive a copy of the notice, even if a mortgage company handles payment, so you can see how your tax was calculated and where your tax dollars go. Please verify that your mortgage company has paid your tax bill each year.  This is the taxpayers responsibility.

WHAT IF I BOUGHT OR SOLD THE PROPERTY DURING THE YEAR?
The seller usually pays a pro-rated tax during closing for the portion of the year they owned the property.  The buyer is then responsible to pay the entire tax amount when billed. If you are in doubt, refer to your closing settlement statement.

WHAT PAYMENT METHODS ARE AVAILABLE?
You may pay your bill by cash, check, and money order or online. Make your check or money order payable to: Christian County Sheriff's Office. Include the bill number, (shown on your bill), on your check or money order.

HOW DO I MAKE MY PAYMENT?
There are three convenient methods to pay your property tax bill.

  • Mail your tax bill payment stub & check to:
    Christian County Sheriff's Office (Monday-Friday 8:00-4:00)
    216 West 7th Street
    Hopkinsville, Ky 42240
  • Pay in person at the Sheriff's Office. Remember, you must bring your tax bill with you!
  • Pay Online with a Credit Card-Link to TaxMaster
    * Note: Taxpayers will be charged a convenience fee by the bank.
  • Log in ID and Password is “guest”

WILL I GET A RECEIPT?
Yes, but your receipt will differ depending on the payment type you choose:

  • Mail in: Your canceled check or money order stub will be your receipt or mail self-address stamped envelope.
  • Pay Online: The final page of the online payment process will give you the opportunity to print your receipt.

WHAT IF MY CHECK IS RETURNED FOR INSUFFICIENT FUNDS?
There is a fee of $50 for any returned check. Also, when you resend your payment, additional penalties may apply, based on the late payment schedule shown on your bill.

OTHER HELPFUL INFORMATION:

If your tax bill indicates anything other than 00 in the tax district field, you will also have a city tax on your property.

The collection dates will be:

  • 10/01-11/01 2% Discount
  • 11/02-12/31 Face Amount
  • 01/01-01-31 5% Penalty
  • 02/01-04/15 21% Penalty

 

 

Delinquent bills will be transferred to the Christian County Clerk at the close of business on April 15th.
