CCSO Warns of Tax Scam

08/06/2020:

The Christian County Sheriff’s Office puts a high priority on informing our residents of scams that have occurred in our area. We believe that education is key in battling this issue and we try to distribute information on these scams regularly.

In this scam, scammers pretend to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Criminals impersonate IRS employees and call taxpayers in aggressive and sophisticated ways. Imposters claim to be IRS employees and sound very convincing. They use fake names and phony IRS identification badge numbers. They claim that the recipient hasn’t paid taxes or is involved in some kind of illegal activity involving their tax information. They may demand that the person “settle” the tax dispute by sending instant funds via iTunes, MoneyPak, Target, or any other prepaid gift card to complete the transaction. They utilize the concept of fear and threaten the person with legal action such as criminal charges and/or incarceration. They’re demanding and threatening – and do not reflect how the IRS handles enforcement matters.

If you receive these types of calls, HANG UP. If you believe there is a discrepancy with your taxes, contact the IRS yourself,  1-800-829-1040.
