Driver Arrested for DUI and Endangering Deputies, Juveniles

Christian County, KY – A man was arrested for reckless driving and DUI on May 7th, 2025, after nearly striking a sheriff’s cruiser and four individuals—including two deputies and two juveniles—during an active investigation.

Deputies were speaking with juveniles near a patrol vehicle parked sideways with emergency lights activated in the southbound lane on Butler Rd., when a vehicle sped toward them, narrowly missing the cruiser. The driver reversed and made a second attempt to pass before stopping when ordered by deputies.

The driver, 54-year-old Gerald Rothenburger of Hopkinsville, appeared visibly impaired, showing signs of intoxication and difficulty performing field sobriety tests.

The suspect was arrested and charged with:

  • Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree – Police Officer
  • Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence – 3rd Offense (Aggravated Circumstance)
  • Reckless Driving

No injuries were reported.
