Proactive Traffic Enforcement Leads to Arrest of Convicted Felon with Handgun

Hopkinsville, KY – A routine traffic stop on July 29, 2025, near Mile Marker 2 on I69 led to the arrest of 24-year-old Fernando Irizarry Arroyo and the seizure of a loaded .38 revolver.

A Christian County Sheriff’s Deputy stopped Arroyo’s vehicle after failing to verify its registration plate. The deputy noticed a strong odor of burnt marijuana and Arroyo was uncooperative, refusing to provide vehicle information or proof of insurance. A search revealed a valid Tennessee plate inside the vehicle and a loaded handgun within Arroyo’s reach. A background check confirmed Arroyo is a convicted felon, prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Arroyo faces charges of No Registration Plates, Improper Display of Registration Plates, Failure to Maintain Required Insurance, and Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon.

“This stop shows how proactive patrols can make a huge impact,” said Sheriff Tyler DeArmond. “Our deputy’s alertness took a dangerous weapon off our streets.”

Arroyo was transported to the Christian County Jail.
